The present very high rate of population growth through immigration is defended by the major parties as a way of more rapidly exploiting Australia's non-renewable resources, a double whammy on our fragile natural environment.
Many of these resources will be completely exhausted before the end of the present century if present trends are allowed to continue.
Refugee and humanitarian intake has consistently been a tiny fraction of total intake from abroad.
This fact is often deliberately misrepresented by high growth advocates by confusing refugees with immigrants and claiming that cuts in immigration would necessarily mean cutting the refugee intake. Not true!
Australia has international humanitarian obligations which it is failing to discharge.
Australia could easily increase its refugee and humanitarian program within a much reduced overall immigration intake.
Stop Population Growth Now believes that far more human welfare could be achieved by increasing Australia's foreign aid program aiming to help people to achieve a sustainable lifestyle in their own country.
At the present time there are approx 2,000,000 persons living overseas with rights to reside in Australia. In an increasingly unstable world, many of these persons may seek to return here. It is therefore prudent to limit our population to ensure there is capacity for us to accept them if it is necessary in the future.
Stop Population Growth Now believes all immigration must be non-discriminatory with regard to ethnicity, sex, religion, colour or nationality
Stop Population Growth Now recognises that zero population growth cannot be achieved overnight. However, the numbers shown as "Short term" can be achieved quickly, as they mainly depend on cuts in immigration.
